Racine Zoo AmeriCorps Program


 
The incumbent is a three-quarter-time AmeriCorps position serving 1,200 hours (32 hours per week) over a 10-month term of service (August 19, 2019 through June 19, 2020). The incumbent will serve public school students in Racine County through the preparation, instruction, and evaluation of environmental educational programming. Additionally, the incumbent will spend 8-16 hours per week assisting in the Racine Zoo Animal Care department with animal husbandry, animal training, and other service activities as requested by their supervisor falling within the scope of allowable activities. Schedules will vary depending on a changeable program schedule, but scheduled hours will typically be 4 days a week and 8 hours a day, usually falling between Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm. Members will also be required to serve in the Racine Zoo Animal Care Department on either Saturday or Sunday on a rotating basis. Individuals may be required to perform other position-related instructions within the scope of their normal service activities as requested by their supervisor (Conservation Education Manager and/or AmeriCorps Program Coordinator) in alignment with the grant and not unallowable or prohibited activities and subject to reasonable accommodation. Members are required to serve for the full 1,200 hours service term in order to successfully complete the Racine Zoo AmeriCorps Program and become eligible to receive an education award. Members will also receive training in a variety of areas to support and enhance the member's service to the students, including, but not limited to, proper animal handling and husbandry, classroom behavioral management techniques, engaging students with conservation messaging, as well as certification in Project WET and Project WILD curriculums.



Member Duties : During the Racine Zoo AmeriCorps Program, members will be providing direct services to Racine Zoo AmeriCorps Program students via educational programming, as well as effective delivery of pre- and post- intervention assessments. Members will assist in the creation of educational interpretive programming and document service activities according to program requirements. Members will also assist in the Racine Zoo Animal Care department through animal handling and maintenance of trained behaviors. Members will also facilitate volunteer recruitment and training, write reflections on service for Zoo and AmeriCorps publications, and act as a positive role model to students in the Racine Zoo AmeriCorps program. Individuals may be required to perform other position-related instructions within the scope of their normal service activities as requested by their supervisor in alignment with the grant and not unallowable or prohibited activities and subject to reasonable accommodation.
