Music Instructor


 

Position Summary:

Music Instructors provide one-on-one lessons to students in a virtual lesson space across any instruments within the instructors' areas of expertise. Instructors are expected to work with students to develop their instrumental technique, performance ability, and in some cases, advanced skills such as notation, theory, and improvisation.

Duties:

Music Instructors are responsible for meeting with students in an online virtual space, providing them with music instruction; maintaining a professional demeanor; upholding the rules, regulations, and standards of North Star Tutors; and efficiently completing post-lesson duties at the conclusion of each lesson. Instructors are also expected to communicate with parents on an as-needed basis to inform them of student progress and make recommendations as to the amount of instruction required, as well as reschedule canceled lessons and communicate frequently with the administration.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ideal candidates will be looking for 10-30 hours of work per week, have a wide range of knowledge and skills, have a reasonable understanding of technology, and must be able to work with limited oversight. Tutors must be able to work with children of all ages in a professional and friendly manner. Tutors should also possess a passion for supporting students as well as a strong sense of empathy. North Star Tutors receives students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences; a tutor must be able to meet the student where they are emotionally or mentally and work with them without any type of judgment or discrimination. The hours worked by a given tutor may change week-to-week depending on student sign-ups and cancellations. An ideal candidate will have a somewhat flexible schedule to accommodate new students, although, upon hire, a tutor can define their own availability around their existing obligations.

**This is a startup company. At times there will not be existing policies or procedures for how to handle a given situation. Working at North Star Tutors requires a sense of independence and a willingness to be flexible in a fast-paced and frequently changing environment.**

Required Experience/Education/Training:

Music instructors must have a high school diploma, as well as an above average understanding of at least one musical instrument (singing is included) in which they are able to teach. Instructors need not however be able to teach a given instrument at every level to qualify as an instructor in that instrument. Experience in tutoring, teaching, mentoring, or working with kids is preferred but not required.

Background Check:

Safety is a top priority at North Star Tutors. For this reason, all employees who will have contact with students or families throughout the course of their employment, regardless of position, will be required to submit to a background check. This background check will include federal, state, and local criminal records checks, a sex offender registry check, and a domestic watchlist check.
