My name is David G. Standaert, and I am the newly appointed Chair of Neurology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB). I understand that you are a board eligible/certified neurologist with stroke fellowship training, and I invite you to consider the faculty appointment at UAB described below. Several factors combine to produce one of the most attractive opportunities for stroke neurology practice in the

United States including:
(1) Potential to Build a Nationally Prominent Stroke Program: Our program represents the only Comprehensive Stroke Center within the entire state, which gives us a significant opportunity for growth within a catchment population of more than 4 million people and in a region of the country with a high instance of stroke. Our hospital has a 20 bed Stroke Unit and the stroke service is growing at a compounded rate of 35% annually with systemic TPA treatment rate exceeding 100 cases per year for two years in a row. Our current annual patient volume exceeding 1,800 stroke cases includes neurosurgical stroke cases. The UAB Hospital is a level 1 Trauma center with more than 2,000 trauma cases, one of the busiest in the nation. A wide case array routinely provides a firm basis for research interests. The stroke service is directed by Dr. Andrei Alexandrov, one of the nation’s leading stroke neurologists. He has developed a number of novel stroke therapies and tools including ultrasonic technologies for sonothrombolysis, hemodynamic testing and cerebral perfusion augmentation. The Stroke team is actively participating in an impressive number of NIH- and industry-sponsored clinical trials. The program assertively embraces endovascular therapies for stroke. Candidates with endovascular fellowship training will have the opportunity to perform procedures in a dedicated neuro-angio suite located within the 14 cath labs of our Heart and Vascular Center in addition to the required primary duties associated with stroke call, inpatient rounds and outpatient clinic. The stroke program benefits from an established neurosurgery program and the prevalence of stroke trained clinical extenders. An ACGME accredited Vascular Neurology fellowship (led by Dr. Ivan Lopez) complements a large and competitive Neurology residency program (24 current residents, 6 added per year) with residents rotating thru our in-patient stroke service that is separate from the general neurology and consult hospital services. (2) Resources to Support Clinical and Translational Research Interests: The UAB School of Medicine has over $450 million annually in research funding, of which approximately $250 million is from NIH grants. The school is led by a neurologist, Dr. Ray Watts, Senior Vice President and Dean of the School of Medicine. More than 50 new neuroscientists have been added to the UAB faculty over the last 6 years, and continued growth in the neurosciences is one of pillars of the Strategic Plan for the School of Medicine. The infrastructure for research is substantial: UAB has an NIH Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) which supports a range of translational activities, and was recently named as one of the 25 sites which will form the NIH funded NeuroNEXT Programs (Network for Excellence in Neuroscience Clinical Trials). This network will host a wide range of Phase II trials in neurology, providing a robust, standardized, and accessible infrastructure and funding to facilitate rapid development and implementation of protocols in neurological disorders affecting adult and/or pediatric populations. UAB also has a strong program in stroke epidemiology. The faculty includes Drs. George Howard who directs REGARDS, the largest NIH funded stroke epidemiology research project in the country. UAB is home to numerous nationally recognized researchers in clinical and basic sciences as well as epidemiology/biostatistics related to stroke, cardiovascular diseases and genetics. (3) Ongoing Investment in Clinical Infrastructure and Program Growth: The 1,100 bed medical center includes new infrastructure renovations and upgrades including new OR suites, ICU’s, catheterization/imaging/interventional suites and an ER department covering almost a full square block. Another recently completed expansion project is the 430,000 square feet Women’s and Infant Center and Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Center. There is also a major expansion currently underway to the adjacent Alabama Children’s Hospital. Together with existing facilities, the net square footage at the UAB School of Medicine exceeds 12 million square feet. The UAB neuroscience program was ranked among “America’s Best” by US News and World Report in 2010 and 2011. The Neurology program has experienced rapid growth in the size of the faculty over the past 5 years, increasing from 22 faculty members to 46 faculty members currently. However, the department growth is just getting underway. Over the near term we plan to add an additional 18 faculty members within Neurology, roughly 13 of these additions will be clinical appointments and the remaining 5 appointments will comprise our pursuit in translational and basic science research. (4) Aggressive Compensation Model: UAB is committed to providing the resources needed to attract the outstanding individuals needed to carry on the mission of caring for patients with neurological disorders. Our compensation model begins with a very strong base salary, and variability options are available to faculty with an interest compensation that is derived from RVU productivity and overall departmental profitability. (5) Enviable life style: The rolling countryside of the greater Birmingham area provides a beautiful and comfortable lifestyle. Birmingham is the largest city in AL with a metropolitan area of approximately 1.3 million people or 25% of the entire state. It is a culturally diverse city that ranks as one of the most important business centers in the Southeastern United States, and Birmingham is also one of the largest banking centers in the United States. Birmingham is perfectly suited to growing families with superior public and private schools and a low cost of living. It is one of the few places in the United States where a 4 hour drive affords one the access to mountains, beaches or a major metropolitan area.
