Provides nursing care, pre and post surgical/procedural care, through competent application o! f the nursing process for assigned patients, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), according to established standards of practice and departmental policies and procedures in order to maximize the patient's potential for health and well being.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions
Provides nursing care for assigned patients. Contributes to the assessment of patient conditions including physical, psychosocial, development and age specific factors for neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics and delivers care accordingly under the supervision of Registered Nurse.
Uses the nursing process to provide patient care.
Executes medical regimens within legal scope of practice under the direction of a RN including medication administration and treatments that have been verified and acknowledged by the pharmacist and the RN.
Participates in patient and family teaching and reinforces education as needed. !
Assists with safely ambulating post-procedure patient! s.
Assists with transferring patients to and from stretchers and wheelchairs, on and off exam/OR table, and assists patients in and out of vehicles.
Communicates with patients, visitors, nursing staff and personnel from other departments.
Assists with maintaining surgery schedule, patient schedule calls and post-op follow-up call backs.
Performs record keeping duties and other clerical functions as it relates to patient care and department needs.
Participates in the use of Meditech System for supply ordering, patient billing, scheduling, and orders.
Participates in economical utilization of supplies and ensures that equipment and unit is maintained in a clean and safe manner.
Responsible for adhering to all facility and department policies and procedures.
Participates in performance improvement (PI) activities directed. Assists with PI measures and activities including data collecting, serving on teams ! and supporting and implementing changes necessary for improvement.
Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet.
Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required
High school diploma or equivalent required. Current Alabama license as a LPN and in good standing with the Alabama Board of Nursing. Peri-operative or acute care nursing experience preferred. Excellent communication skills; strong interpersonal and customer servi! ce skills; strong clinical knowledge and application; ability to perfor! m duties independently and take direction from supervising RN. Ability to meet behavioral expectations and ability to work well with a team. BCLS required. Must be able to read, write, speak and comprehend English. Computer skills necessary for clinical documentation and for clerical functions necessary to support departmental needs.
Working Conditions
Exposed to all patient care elements; subject to stress and fatigue; prolonged periods of standing and/or walking; frequent kneeling and stooping; Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds; and the ability to frequently transfer, transport, turn, and position patients weighing up to 300 pounds. Physical presence onsite is essential. Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range. Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
